Population health is a shared responsibility. Improving population health requires the assessment of health problems and priorities, the formulation of interventions and policies designed to improve population health, and equitable access to essential health care.
The programme provides participants with an interdisciplinary perspective on population health problems in low and middle-income countries. The course focuses on methods for analyzing population health problems and their determinants and trends over time and covers modern methods for quantitative assessment of the (cost-) effectiveness of interventions and policies considering both process (governance) and outcomes. The programme covers the link between health and economic development and provides the elements necessary to analyze the financing of health care in low and middle-income countries, emphasizing specific problems of implementing insurance arrangements such as possible trade-offs between efficiency and equity characteristics of various payment mechanisms and the appropriateness of community-based schemes. It also addresses priority setting in health policy, discussing health technology assessment and cost-effectiveness analysis of health interventions. The programme also devotes attention to recent developments in the quantitative analysis of health problems and policies. Impact evaluations using survey data will form a key component in this respect. By the end of the programme, participants will be aware of theoretical insights and practical approaches relating to the analysis of international health problems and the design and evaluation of health interventions and policies in low and-middle income countries.
Target group
The programme provides training in international health to young and mid-career health professionals, (working in international, national and local development or health agencies and research institutes). The course is also open for MSc and Doctoral researchers who seek further training and experience to pursue their professional or academic career in the area of international health.
