Dik Wolfson

Professor D. Wolfson is a leading economist and Professor Emeritus of Economics, Erasmus University, Rotterdam. Professor Wolfson is an influential personality within academia in the Netherlands. He served on several academic advisory boards including the Board of Supervisors of the Institute of Social Studies (ISS). He is also the Chairman of the seven-member Scholarship Committee of the Netherlands Institute of Advance Study (NIAS) in the Humanities and Social Sciences since 2002.

Between 1986 and 1990 Professor Wolfson was Rector of the ISS. He worked hard to strengthen ISS as an international centre of excellence in development studies and cultural change as well as a meeting place for young professionals from all over the world to learn to respect, trust and enjoy each other’s company.

His major achievements during his rectorate included the CERES research school, in which ISS cooperates with five universities in providing PhD education. Wolfson was very much involved in the legal recognition of ISS having the right to award PhD degrees. Furthermore, the relocation of the Institute from the old building at Witte Brug to the present building, opposite the gardens of the Royal Palace. And he was also instrumental in engineering a sustainable relationship between ISS and the university system in the Netherlands.
