Louis Emmerij
Louis (L.J.) Emmerij, former Rector of The Institute of Social Studies (ISS) is an eminent Professor of Development Economics. He started his career with the Institut d’Etudes Economiques et Sociales, University of Paris in 1961. After one year, Louis joined the Directorate for Scientific Affairs of the Organization for economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), where he worked until 1970.Between 1971 and 1976; he worked as the Director of the World Employment Programme of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva. After completion of the tenure (1976-85) as Rector of the ISS in 1985, he became the President of OECD Development Center in Paris from January, 1986 until December 1992. Professor Louis had been appointed as Special Adviser to the President, Inter-American Development Bank, Washington D.C. until February 1999. Since May 1999, he has been working as the Co-Director of United Nations Intellectual History Project and Senior Research Fellow, The Graduate Center of City University of New York until present.
Louis Emmerij received doctoral degree in Economics of Education from University of Paris in 1971. Earlier, he did his MA degree in International Economics in 1961 from Columbia University. In 1985, he received an Honorary Doctorate in Economics from the State University of Ghent.
