ISS News

Passing away Karel Jansen

Karel JansenKarel Jansen, Associate Professor in Macro Economics at ISS, unexpectedly passed away in April 2011. The news arrived at ISS when staff was in the midst of preparing for Karel's festive farewell from the Institute on the occasion of his impending retirement. Both as a professional and as a person, he was a man with outstanding qualities, always with an open ear for his students and colleagues and always prepared to give his own, highly original views. And always with a good sense of humour. We will all miss him sorely and our thoughts are with his wife and family.

Peace Diplomacy, Global Justice and International Agency: Rethinking Human Security and Ethics in the Spirit of Dag Hammarskjöld (1905-1961)

Dag HammarskjoldConference of The Hague Academic Coalition, Peace Palace, 9 and 10 November 2011.

The ISS is one of the founding organizations of The Hague Academic Coalition and is actively involved in this conference. The conference is not only meant as a tribute to Dag Hammarskjöld: because of Dag Hammarskjöld’s important role in the early decolonization processes and in making the UN truly independent, the conference aims to critically analyse the relationship between justice, peace, democracy and development.

The conference will be opened with a keynote speech by Louis Moreno-Ocampo, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. On Day 2, 10 November, panel sessions will be held on the basis of papers to be presented by professionals from a wide range of disciplines and countries.

We kindly invite expressions of interest, with a title and abstract of a paper (300 words maximum) dealing with one or more of the above questions, to be presented at the meeting of day two to be sent to secretariat@remove-this.haguecoalition.org.

More details of the conference and the call for papers is available from the conference website
