Rural Development, Environment and Population Studies (Staff Group 4)

The staff group is engaged in teaching, research and advisory work on rural and human development, with a focus on:

  • poverty
  • socio-economic security
  • social provisioning
  • population studies
  • the management of rural resources and resource conflicts

Teaching and research by staff members of the Rural Development, Environment, and Population Studies group is marked by a commitment to the central role of equitable, broad-based and sustainable development. This is combined with an explicit engagement with the analysis of power relations and processes of global change that are reinforcing rather than reducing poverty and socio-economic insecurity.

This engagement and commitment is reflected in the group’s diverse portfolio of research and innovative teaching initiatives on topics ranging from rural development and environment to social development, social protection, population, and poverty. The group is also actively engaged in methodology teaching at both the MA and PhD levels.

Faculty and associated PhD students conduct research in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern and Central Europe.
