Urgent request for your help from ISS Rector

These are challenging times for many organizations. This also applies to ISS. Financial cuts are being made everywhere and will affect our next generation of students. The NFP grants, of which many of you were once a recipient, have been frozen. There are likely to be far few...er fellowships available for the September 2011 intake of students than we will need. Lack of finance should not prevent able candidates from coming to ISS. We are turning to you as alumni for help/ideas as to how we might be able to generate some additional fellowships to support this group. If you can help to ensure that the next cohort of ISS students can access the training they need, please get in touch. Be as specific as possible. Are there organizations, individuals, companies in your country or networks with whom you could link us in our pursuit of funds for fellowships? Time is short and the need is urgent. We are counting on you to help us to continue to remain accessible to those individuals who make ISS such a rich knowledge community. Please reply via Facebook or an email to me (rector@remove-this.iss.nl). Many thanks in advance for all your suggestions. Leo de Haan, Rector ISS.

New open access journals

Two new open access journals can be reached through the ISS website:

Your Research Paper online?

Did you graduate in 2008 or 2009? If so, your Research Paper (RP) is available through
http://opc-prd.ubib.eur.nl:8080/DB=3/LNG=EN/CMD?ACT=SRCH&IKT=1016&SRT=YOP&TRM=KEY+%3D+!!p%3F
In case you have specific objections to this, please let us know by sending an email to njsmit@remove-this.iss.nl.
ISS would like to publish the Research Papers written before 2008 as well. To do that we need your explicit approval. If you are happy for us to publish your Research Paper online through the ISS website, please let us know through this link: https://extensionform.dabbledb.com/page/mapapersonline/ZIVXpafj In return ISS will be happy to send you the PDF file of your Research Paper (this may take a couple of weeks).

It may be that some alumni have been approached by publishers (specifically one called Lambert Publishing) who wish to publish your RP. We have noticed that there is an ongoing discussion on internet whether these large scale emails from Lambert Publishing are a scam or not. As long as those discussions are ongoing, and especially as long as LAP asks for your bank account number (apparently, to pay your royalties) we would advise you to be reluctant in accepting this specific publishing offer. You may prefer to advertise electronic access to your work through EUR, or invest energy in publishing your thesis with a renowned publisher.

PhD Alumni chapter NANC China

The Netherlands Alumni Network China (NANC) has just established an NANC PhD Alumni Chapter. The aim of this chapter is to maintain and expand a special PhD alumni network in China and to improve the communication amongst these alumni themselves and with their host institutions.

The NANC PhD alumni chapter is meant to serve as a platform to provide the means and opportunities for PhD alumni/candidates to develop their professional as well as academic interests, and thereby ultimately improve Sino-Dutch cooperation on scientific research and social development.

Chinese individuals who have obtained a PhD degree from the Netherlands and who are residing in China; besides, other people (both Chinese and foreign origins, like the Dutch) who have conducted an academic research in a Dutch higher education institution or a research organization in the Netherlands are also very welcome to join this alumni chapter and become a member.

For more information, please check the website (http://nanc.nesochina.org) or contact Selano Li, the alumni officer at nanc@remove-this.nesochina.org

StuNed Refresher Courses Indonesia

Since 2009 StuNned has run the StuNed Refresher Course (RC). This Refresher Course is targeted at alumni who have studied in a Dutch higher education institution sponsored by any of Dutch scholarship programmes, particularly StuNed. The main objective of the programme is to up-date the knowledge and competence of alumni in their fields through a 2-week training in Indonesia by inviting trainers from the Netherlands. StuNed scholarship covers all expenses of the course both for the participants and the trainers.

If a StuNed alumnus or the organisation where s/he is working would like to have a certain training which is still within the StuNed criteria, they may apply by submitting the request to Neso Indonesia. In other words, the need or request of training should come from alumni or the institution where alumni work so that their competence can be enhanced.

The alumni must have worked in Indonesia at least two years after completing their study in the Netherlands.

How to apply?

We welcome any request for a refresher course from our alumni and/or their institutions. It should be demand-driven. The requested course should be relevant to the embassy’s MASP (Multi-annual Strategic Plan) which are good governance, economic governance and environmental governance. All requests will be assessed by Neso and the embassy. Any approved request will be followed up by Neso by contacting the relevant provider in the Netherlands. The maximum budget for each RC is EUR 55,000.

Neso and the Embassy will prioritise requests that are coming from the Embassy’s partners. The list of the partners can be obtained from our website (www.nesoindonesia.or.id).

For more information

Should you have any further questions with regards to StuNed Refresher Course, please contact Ungki Aldar (Scholarships Department)
ungki.aldar@remove-this.nesoindonesia.or.id or 021-5290 2172 ext.221.
