ISS degrees automatically recognized in EcuadorThanks to good cooperation between ISS alumni (especially Gonzalo Ortiz) and staff members, we are happy to let you know that from now on the academic degrees, obtained at ISS by students from Ecuador, will be recognized and registered automatically by Senescyt. Library Erasmus University RotterdamAlumni living in the Netherlands can make use of the services of the library of the EUR in Rotterdam. Instead of paying a membership fee of € 30 a year, they pay € 10 (of which 50% contributes to the Erasmus Scholarship Fund). |
Scholarships for self-financing studentsThe ISS has established two funds to support students without any other form of scholarship:

Transatlantic Double Degree Programme in International Security and Development PolicyThe ISS is pleased to announce the establishment of a new Double Degree Programme together with the Maxwell School of Syracuse University, USA and the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, Germany. The two-year Double Degree programme will start in the autumn semester of 2011. Scholarships are available from the EU-US Atlantis programme for citizens of EU countries and the USA if you apply before 15 April 2011. Diploma course in Sustainable Local Economic Development1st joint ISS-IHS diploma course Starting on 6 April 2011, this is the first course to be offered jointly by two EUR institutes - ISS and IHS (the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies). 15 students from around the world have registered to take part in this three week diploma course. The course deals with the concept of Local Economic Development and how this is linked with (small) enterprise development. Fellowship deadline for USS programme on 22 AprilFollowing the success of the 2011 programme, USS is offering the same course from 11 January till 23 March 2012. There are a limited number of NFP fellowships, and the deadline for application is 22 April - so please do get in touch with ISS soon if you are interested: student.office@iss.nl The course Universalizing Socio-economic Security finished on 25 March, with simultaneous diploma ceremonies at ISS in the Hague and CDS in Trivandrum, India. 7 students successfully finished a 5.5 week course in The Hague, 4 stayed for the 10.5 week course, and 3 went to SEWA in Ahmedabad and the Centre for Development Studies in Trivandrum. A very diverse group of participants created friendships and an atmosphere that will long be remembered. All were able to explore their own specific interest in great depth, including topics such as: international migrants from Vietnam, health insurance in Kenya, and policies for and participation of Roma in Hungary, - all benefiting from the international expertise and links created through the course. |

Umme Busra Fateha Sultana (Bangladesh, Women, Gender, Development 2008/2009) is Lecturer at the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh, in the department of Women and Gender Studies. Recently Oxford University (UK) has published one of her articles in their Journal which is distributed by the Project Muse. The article is based on Sultana's Research Paper, written at ISS. The full text is available here and Sultana is happy to hear your comment. |

Alumni meetings |
In the past months ISS alumni meetings were held in Colombia, Bangladesh, USA, Bolivia, Surinam, Ecuador, Vietnam, India and Nepal. Apart from ISS alumni, also other alumni of Erasmus University Rotterdam and prospective ISS students were invited. The latter, to give them a flavour of what they can expect while at ISS in The Hague. Please go to the website for more information and great pictures. |
Refresher Courses |
Refresher courses are certificate of attendance courses (mostly of two-week duration), organized for alumni in their home countries or regions, and meant to increase the impact and prolong the effect of earlier training. IISS alumni are cordially invited to apply for Refresher courses that will be organized by IHS, the international institute of Urban Management of Erasmus University Rotterdam. Please check whether there is a course offer in your region and in your area of interest. Information on ISS refresher courses (two in 2011) and refresher courses of similar organizations will follow.
