Umme Busra Fateha Sultana from Bangladesh has been awarded with a prestigious and highly competitive Commonwealth Scholarship to study a Dphil in Gender, Media and Sexualities at Sussex Research Centre for Cultural Studies (SCCS) at the University of Sussex. Ms Sultana graduated from ISS in 2009 with an MA in Women, Gender, Development. She is a lecturer in Women and Gender Studies at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. |
ISS alumna Karen Gabriel (India, PhD in Development, Gender, Media, Culture, 1996 – 2001) was awarded with the European Union's Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship for Senior Researchers. |
Subhasish Dey has been awarded the prestigious ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council of UK) scholarship of UK to pursue his PhD in Development Economics at the University of Manchester, UK. He starts his PhD study in September 2011. Subhasish who followed the specialization Poverty Studies and Policy Analysis graduated in 2009 with distinction and best research paper award. |

ISS alumnus honouredDr. Vasant Moharir, ISS alumnus and former staff member was honoured recently at the annual conference of the International Association of Schools and Institutes of Public Administration (IASIA) in Rome.He received a lifetime service award for services to the association and to the international network of public administrators (e.g. the sister association IIAS). Vasant Moharir studied at ISS from 1967 to 1969 and was a staff member here from 1970 to 1999. |

Passing away Karel JansenKarel Jansen, Associate Professor in Macro Economics at ISS, has unexpectely passed away in April 2011. The news arrived at ISS when staff was in the midst of preparing for Karel's festive farewell from the Institute on the occasion of his impending retirement. Both as a professional and as a person, he was a man with outstanding qualities, always with an open ear for his students and colleagues and always prepared to give his own, highly original views. And always with a good sense of humour. We will all miss him sorely and our thoughts are with his wife and family. |
Veni subsidy for Dr. Bram BüscherThe Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded the prestigious Veni grant to Dr. Bram Büscher, lecturer in Environment and Sustainable Development at ISS. Büscher receives this grant for his project 'Nature 2.0: the political economy of conservation in online and Southern African environments'.You can read more about this here. |
Refresher CourseISS refresher courses will take place in Ecuador and the Philippines. Application for the refresher course in the Philippines is possible until 20th of August 2011. Theme: Gender and Generation in Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights: the new agenda of Population and Development Research and Policymaking. ISS alumni can also apply for IHS Refresher courses. |
2 ISS students present papers at prestigious conferenceSylvanus Kwaku Afesorgbor presented a paper (with Peter van Bergeijk) entitled Multi membership and effectiveness of RTAs in Western and Southern Africa: A comparative study of ECOWAS and SADC in which he estimates the impact of regional trade agreements in Africa (in particular ECOWAS and SADC) and compares this to the a benchmark of North South trade integration. Sylvanus graduated from ISS in 2010 with an MA in Development Studies. Djalita Fialho presented a paper entitled Aiming high, falling short: the Least Developed Country (LDC) category at 40 in which she analyses the motivation behind the UN decision to establish the LDC category in 1971. Djalita is a PhD fellow at ISS. They presented papers at the Seventh Annual Conference of the Verein für Socialpolitik Research Committee Development Economics hosted by KfW and DIW in Berlin, Germany on 24-25 June. |
