ISS alumna Johanna Debora Imelda (from Indonesia), now Debby Tobing, obtained her PhD degree on 14 September 2011 at the University of Amsterdam. Congratulations!! Her thesis is entitled: Mobilizing Motherhood: A Case Study of Two Women's Organizations Advocating HIV Prevention Programs in Indonesia. Roy Huijsmans (Population and Development 2003/2004) has started work at ISS as lecturer in the Children, Youth and Development programme. After his graduation from ISS, Roy Huijsmans did a PhD at Durham University. He then went on to work at the University of Amsterdam as lecturer in Development Studies (Children's Rights Track). |
Peter Kibet Kiptilil Arapbiwott (MA Development Economics 2008/2009) has a new job since 1 October 2011. He will be moving to the 5th largest city of Kenya called Eldoret after his appointment as Chief Manager in charge of Planning, Research and Development at Kerio Valley Development Authority. The authority deals with poverty and Development issues in underdeveloped areas in Northern Kenya faced living in the desert |

ISS Honorary Fellow Martha Nussbaum delivers pre-conference lecture at ISSOn 5 September 2011 Martha Nussbaum spoke about her new book 'Creating Capabilities: The Human Development Approach'. The lecture preceded the Human Development and Capability Association conference held in The Hague on 6-8 September 2011. Professor Nussbaum is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at Chicago University, USA. She received an honorary fellowship from ISS in 2006. Opening MA Programme 2011172 new students started their MA Development Studies at ISS in September. These new students come from 48 countries in all regions of the world: 68 students from Asia, 51 from Africa, 26 from Central and South America and 23 from Europe and North America. Their average age is 30 years. The opening ceremony of the MA Programme was held on Thursday 8 September 2011 at ISS. After the introduction and welcome by Dr. Jos Mooij, Deputy Rector Education, ISS Rector, Professor Leo de Haan introduced Mr Hans van Baalen MEP, a Dutch politician and leader of the liberal party VVD in the European Parliament who gave the keynote speech. New set-up to ISS Masters programmeISS has decided to cluster the existing specializations into five new Majors. This creates greater coherence in the programme and provides more scope for attuning the programme to students' specific interests and needs. Applicants for the 2012-13 MA Programme in Development Studies will now be able to select one of the following Majors:

59th Anniversary celebrations at ISSOn Thursday 13 October, ISS celebrated its 59th Dies Natalis with a lecture entitled' Who will own the countryside? Dispossession, rural youth and the future of farming' which was delivered by Professor Ben White who is retiring this year from ISS. |

Maputo, Mozambique, 25 August 2011 On the 25th of August an alumni meeting was held in Maputo, Mozambique, hosted by professor Leo de Haan, Rector of ISS-EUR. During the meeting an interesting discussion unfolded on the role alumni can play for ISS-EUR, and what the ISS-EUR can do to inform alumni on ISS-EUR initiatives. Alumni indicated that they would be willing to assist ISS-EUR to attract students, and some ideas were discussed in how ISS-EUR could facilitate this. But - all in all - it was not only serious discussions that marked the evening: everyone enjoyed the superb seafood, drinks and especially the good company of former students and staff of ISS-EUR. |

Tehran, Iran, 21 September 2011 11 ISS alumni participated in the alumni gathering in the Homa Hotel in Tehran. Apart from the host, Dr. Mahmood Messkoub, also the Dutch ambassador in Iran, mr. Cees Kole, attended the great gathering. |

Climate Compatible Development Tools: A guide for national planningThis new, interactive users’ guide to tools for climate and development planning contains resources and methodologies to help decision-makers through the challenges of development planning in a changing climate. The guide covers over 30 tools for climate compatible development building and planning, from the donor, private sector, NGO and country-led communities.
