New book by Sharada Srinivasan, former student of ISS (PhD in 2006), and now Assistant Professor in International Development Studies at York University, Toronto, Canada entitled: Daughter Deficit, Sex Selection in Tamil Nadu
This book is about girls who are denied the right to live or to be born in India, and it asks why and how such a situation has come about. Daughter elimination in the form of sex selection, female infanticide and neglect is not an aberration or an idiosyncrasy—it accounts for a large proportion of missing girls in India, measured by the sex ratio imbalance in the 0–6 age group. The author examines this disturbing fact from the context of women’s lives to unravel the causes of daughter elimination, and the mechanisms which create and sustain an environment in which this is imaginable.
An interview with the author can be found in The Hindu.

Information on legalizing your diploma
Your Dutch Master and PhD diplomas can be legalized on condition that you submit the originals to the DUO department of the Dutch Ministry of Education.
As the legalization is probably meant for use in your home country, you also need the apostille: i.e. your country authorities will demand legalization.
There are two ways to accomplish the legalization: the choice is up to you or whoever does the procedure for you.
1. By sending your diplomas by registered mail together with the legalization application form (see http://www.ib-groep.nl/International_visitors/Diploma_assessment/Going_abroad/s20_legalizing.asp);
2. By going to the office in Groningen (in person or by proxy). Do not arrive too late: the end of the morning, beginning of the afternoon is good as that will leave enough time to go to the Groningen court to collect the apostille.
As sending by post always involves a certain risk (though this is negligible within the Netherlands but once in a while problematic internationally) it may be wise to use DHL or UPS. Documents will be returned to you by regular registered mail so if you want your diploma sent back by DHL or UPS you must organize it yourself.
