Research

Suzanne Naafs is a PhD candidate in Development Studies at the Institute of Social Studies (ISS), Erasmus University, The Netherlands. She is currently completing a dissertation entitled 'Youth, Work and Lifestyles in an Indonesian Industrial Town'. This study focuses on the changing transitions to work and marriage among urban, lower middle class youth in Indonesia within the context of educational change and neoliberal reform. The findings are based on 13 months of ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2008 and 2010 in the industrial town of Cilegon in Banten (West Java). This PhD project is part of a comparative research programme co-ordinated by KITLV, Leiden and funded by KNAW (2007-2011). The programme is called 'In Search of Middle Indonesia' and aims to study the dynamics of social life in several provincial towns in Indonesia, with a specific focus on intermediate classes and youth.
