Research

Understanding social resistance, and particularly indigenous and working-class women individual and collective resistance to interrelated forms of transnational/global oppressions has been at the core of my thinking and teaching.

I became interested on these topics as an activist in Mexico City that used to work doing research for a network of social movements opposing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Later on, I conducted a my PhD research at the University of Warwick (UK) on the the political economy of transborder civic resistance to open/neo-liberal regionalism in Latin America. After this, I moved to Sweden thanks to a EU-Commission Marie Curie Fellowship to reflect on the gendered nature of these transborder resistances in Latin America at the University of Gothenburg .

My book - Civil Society in the Making of Regionalisms. Power & Resistance across Borders - explores further these themes and will be soon published by Routledge,

As an international studies person, my writing and teaching was for a while focused on mapping paths of civic engagement on regionalisms across the world. Lately, I have been interested more on understanding how placed-based social resistance contributes to global epistemic justice.

One of the current axis of my research agenda is a critical re-thinking of the modern/colonial notion of region and regionalism through the political and epistemological visibility of knowledges and cosmovisions that have been actively produced as backward or sub-altern by hegemonic forms of understanding (including liberlism, marxism and poststructuralism.

I develop these ideas in two of my recent articles: (Re)Thinking the New North America through Women's Citizenship Struggles in Mexico, in J Ayres and L MacDonald (eds), North America in Question: Regional Integration in an Era of Economic Turbulence (University of Toronto, 2011)

(Third World Quarterly., 3 (12), 123-139.)

A second axis of my research agenda is related to my interest in identifying and promoting ways in which the academia can contribute to sustain forms of epistemic dissent aiming at promoting global social justice.

In doing so, I have been involved in collaborative research initiatives dealing with the global governance of knowledge making and the practices of epistemic dissent and resistance that contest its numerous institutional expressions (e.g. Global and Regional governance of trade, NGOization of development agendas, global governance of sexual and reproductive health, etc.). I am currently part of the Transnational Network Other Knowledges Link-text goes here

I am interested in the application of action-research methodologies in my teaching and research and committed to facilitating spaces for mutual learning between practitioners and academics. Third-world and de-colonial feminist theories, modernity/coloniality/decoloniality collective thinking and theories on social resistance to global and regional governance have captured my attention.

I hold a PhD and MA in Politics and International Studies from the University of Warwick and a BA in International Relations from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City.

I have been granted twice the prestigious European Commission Marie Curie Fellowship (2005-2007 and 2007- 2009) and have received Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, Oxford University and Warwick University research grants.
