Research

Cristobal (Cris) Kay is Emeritus Professor in Rural Development and Development Studies. He is Adjunct Professor in International Development Studies (IDS) at Saint Mary's University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; Honorary Research Fellow in Geography and Environmental Sciences in the University of Birmingham, England; International Research Associate, Victoria Institute for Links with Latin America (VILLA), Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand; Member of the Technical-Scientific Council of the Centre of Cooperation for Rural Development (CCDR), University of Lleida, Spain and Professorial Research Associate of the Department of Development Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. He studied at the School of Economics at the University of Chile in Santiago and received his D.Phil. from the University of Sussex in 1971. He has been a fellow of the Centre of Socio-Economic Studies (CESO) at the University of Chile, a visiting professor at the Catholic University in Lima, Peru, and a lecturer in development studies at the University of Glasgow before joining the ISS in 1989. His research interests are in the fields of rural development and development theory, with particular reference to Latin America. He has published several books, about 40 book chapters and over 85 articles in a variety of professional journals. He has taught a variety of courses mainly at postgraduate level on rural development, development theory, development policy and Latin American studies. He has done consultancies for the ILO (Geneva), CEPAL/ ECLAC (Santiago), CIDA (Canada), VLIR (Belgium), ICCO (Netherlands/ Bolivia), IFAD (Rome), UNDP (New York), SIDA/ ASDI (Sweden). He is a member of the Society of Latin America Studies (SLAS), the Latin American Studies Association (LASA), the Development Studies Association UK and Ireland (DSA), the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI), the Seminario Permanente de Investigacion Agraria (SEPIA) in Peru, the Asociacion Latinoamericana de Sociologia Rural (ALASRU), the Netherlands Research School for Resource Studies of Development (CERES), the Netherlands Association of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (NALACS), and the Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID) . He is a co-editor of the Journal of Agrarian Change and was the editor of The European Journal of Development Research and co-editor of the European Review of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. He was also, for many years, on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Peasant Studies, the Bulletin of Latin American Research, Lateinamerika Analysen (Hamburg), and The Journal of Agrarian Change. Currently he is a member of the International Advisory Board of Revista Mexicana de Sociologia (UNAM, Mexico City), Cuadernos de Desarrollo Rural (Colombia), Asian Journal of Latinamerican Studies (Korea), The European Journal of Development Research, ALASRU: Análisis Latinoamericano del Medio Rural (Mexico), Bulletin of Latin American Research and The Journal of Peasant Studies.
