Internet in student hostels and ISS building

ISS building and all ISS student hostels have high speed internet access. Most hostels offer both wireless and wired connections. In some hostels only one type of connection is offered, wired or wireless. These are two ways how to connect to internet:

1. Use the wired network by plugging the network cable in the network wall outlet. The other end of the cable should be plugged in your notebook. That’s it, you are now connected to internet! There is no network cable provided by ISS, you need to purchase your own. Wired network is available in the ISS library, ISS coffee lounge and in following hostels: Dorus, Bazar, Sunneke, Seinpost, Copes, Gondel and Buitenom.

2. Connect to the wireless network by selecting the network named ISS-STUDENTS or ISS-STAFF and use the WPA security key provided to you by ILIAD. For your own safety, and for safety of your colleague students, it is forbidden to give the security key to people outside ISS. Wireless network is available in all public areas inside the ISS building: library, aula, all classrooms, atrium, coffee lounge, attic and most corridors. Wireless internet is not available in the office rooms, although you might get a weak signal from there too. Following hostels have wireless internet installation: Dorus, Bazar, Sunneke, Seinpost, Copes and Oudemol.

Sources of interference that may cause problems

For the wireless networks there are several sources of interfering signals, including microwave ovens, wireless phones, Bluetooth enabled devices, and other wireless access points and routers. If one of these devices is in use within the same room as ISS wireless network, then expect poor wireless network performance. Other wireless routers or access points can cause interference or even complete drop of the signal. Therefore it is not allowed to connect your own wireless access points or routers inside any ISS premises. Microwave ovens operating within 5 meters of an access point will generally cause performance to drop. Bluetooth enabled devices, such as laptops, PDAs and telephones, will also cause performance degradations if operating in close proximately to wireless access stations.
