Two ISS students receive awards

MA student Currun Singh and PhD researcher Koen Voorend have both received awards for their research at ISS

MA student Currun SinghCurrun Singh, an MA student in the Erasmus Mundus Public Policy Programme which includes an MA in Development Studies at ISS, has been awarded the EADI (European Association of Development Institutes) prize for the best essay in Development Studies for 2012. The prize was awarded to him on October 11 on the occasion of the meeting of the Directors of EADI member institutes at the International Institute of Social Studies.in The Hague for his paper titled,

Corsairs in the Crosshairs: Delinking piracy from terrorism in Somalia and implications for governance along the Horn of Africa

Currun’s MA thesis (on which the prize-winning submission was based) was supervised by Prof. Arjun Bedi and Dr. Karim Knio.

 PhD researcher Koen VoorendKoen Voorend, currently a doctoral researcher at ISS and a former ECD student has been awarded a fellowship from the Zeit foundation to pursue his doctoral studies at ISS. The foundation received more than 200 applications and Koen was one of the seven applicants who received a fellowship.

Koen’s current research focuses on welfare regimes, social policy and migration in Central America. Over the last five years, he has worked as a researcher and a lecturer at the University of Costa Rica, and has done short-term research for various other institutions. At ISS his thesis will be supervised by Professor Arjun Bedi and Professor Max Spoor.
