Martin Luther King debate: 'Hidden discrimination in European society'

with professor Mohamed Salih
The International Debate Education Association (IDEA) and the African Studies Centre (ASC) are happy to invite you to commemorate Martin Luther King's legacy on the Martin Luther King Day with a debate. This will also be the opportunity to raise a glass to the new year in the new location of IDEA's office: the Rode Hoed. The debate will be about:
Hidden discrimination in European society
21 January 2013, Martin Luther King Day
19.45 - 21.30 hrs
Rode Hoed, Amsterdam (doors open at 19.00 hrs)
This 'Martin Luther King debate' will focus on his role in consolidating racial justice, non-violence, peace and reconciliation. What can we learn from his messages? Why did people join his movement with endurable, never ending commitment? Are there examples of young people today to solidify his belief for a just world? And how can we support young people to fight for Martin Luther King's dream of liberty, equality, justice and unity in contemporary societies?
The debate addresses these questions and highlights the profound lessons of Martin Luther King. Far from looking backwards, we hope to improve understanding of the present world and to contribute to the debate on new citizenship, identity and the future of our multi-ethnic and multicultural societies. The speakers are:
- Professor Mohamed Salih, Professor of Politics of Development, ISS
- Mpanzu Bamenga, winner of the debate competition 'Debating the Future of African Youth in Europe and Africa' in October 2012
To prepare yourself for this debate, see 'Silent Betrayal' on YouTube about Martin Luther King Jr.
Entry is free.
NB: This debate is the start of a debate series emanating from the After Summer Schools 'Debating the Future of African Youth in Europe and Africa' organized together with the ASC in October 2012. For more information, please contact emason@idebate.nl or call us on 020-6927299.
