ICJ Trial Observation Mission

Interview with Dr. Jeff Handmaker of ISS by ABC Radio Suriname
In May 2012, Dr. Jeff Handmaker carried out an independent trial observation mission in Suriname on behalf of the Geneva-based organization International Commission of Jurists of a Military Tribunal hearing in relation to criminal charges against President Desi Bouterse and others for murder and other crimes that allegedly took place on 8 December 1982.
A comprehensive report was produced afterwards. The mission generated a great deal of media attention at the time, but since the decision was handed down by the military there have been no further developments.
Consequently, the ICJ took a decision in January 2013 to issue a press release, which again generated substantial media attention. Handmaker explained the position of the ICJ in an extended interview on Suriname ABC radio on 28 January 2013, emphasizing the ICJ's concern that extended delays have created uncertainty and confusion.
