John Forester is a leading figure in the field of 'planning theory', known for example for the book 'Planning in the Face of Power' (1989). Since then much of his work has concentrated on reformulating 'planning theory' in the light of on-the-ground experiences in planning, public policy, community development and conflict management. He and colleagues have collected and analysed 'practice stories' - the self-described experiences, perspectives and self-understandings of different people involved in policy conflicts, deliberations and negotiations. Two of Forester's influential books on this work are 'The Deliberative Practitioner' (1999) and 'Dealing with Differences: Dramas of Mediating Public Disputes' (2009).
