Two Decades of Governance Research: Where Have We Been and Where Are We?
Professor Göran Hydén is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Florida in the USA.
Governance is a concept invented by academics, mainstreamed by the international donor community and challenged by civil society. The story of governance tells a lot about the epistemological and methodological changes and challenges of our time. Professor Hyden will give his interpretation and analysis of these issues tracing the changes that have occurred in the use of the concept and the challenges that those working on governance face today.
Academic acclaim has earned Professor Hydén a special Endowment established at the University of Florida. In January 2007 he was listed in PS-Politics (January issue) as one of the 20 most cited scholars in the field of Public Policy, Public Administration and Public Law; and in February 2006 he was awarded the Mentoring and Advising Award by the University of Florida (one of five awardees).
His principal academic interests include: Comparative Politics: Africa, Europe Development Policy and Administration. Currently he is preoccupied with research on Governance and Democracy in Africa, the Role of Social Capital in Development and Foreign Aid in African Countries, and Informal Institutions in Politics and Development.
In terms of public responsibilities and service, Professor Hydén was Member of the Nomination Committee of the American Political Science Association; Member of the Nomination Committee of the American Political Science Association; Curriculum Advisor on establishing a Department of Political Science, Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo, Mozambique.; and Member, Team to Evaluate Swedish Political Science, appointed by the Swedish Humanities and Social Science Research Council, Stockholm.
Previously he was Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of African and Asian Studies, Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the African Journal of Public Administration and Management and President of the African Studies Association (U.S.).

| This revised and expanded second edition of African Politics in Comparative Perspective reviews fifty years of research on politics in Africa and addresses some issues in a new light, keeping in mind the changes in Africa since the first edition was written in 2004. The book synthesizes insights from different scholarly approaches and offers an original interpretation of the knowledge accumulated in the field. Goran Hyden discusses how research on African politics relates to the study of politics in other regions and mainstream theories in comparative politics. He focuses on such key issues as why politics trumps economics, rule is personal, state is weak and policies are made with a communal rather than an individual lens. The book also discusses why in the light of these conditions agriculture is problematic, gender contested, ethnicity manipulated and relations with Western powers a matter of defiance. |
