Development Research Seminar Series: Social Policy After the Financial Crisis (Autumn Theme)

Abstract:
This chapter provides a reflection on the role of social policy, and especially social assistance, in developing countries against the context of the global crisis. It notes the rapid extension of social assistance programmes in developing countries in the last decade, and assesses their contribution to protecting poor and vulnerable households. It also considers the impact of the crisis on poverty and vulnerability, and on the dynamics of social assistance programmes. The chapter ends by considering the challenges for the post-crisis world.
