Research in Progress Seminar by Kitty Jurrius (Stichting Alexander)

Abstract:

Child research should be conducted in an ethical way. Although there is a lot of literature on ethical research, there are still various issues that need to be considered. Stichting Alexander is experienced in participatory research with children in a Dutch context. Children were for example involved in evaluations of youth care institutions, in participatory research concerning youth & finances (and debts), in developing strategies against violence and in designing playgrounds in several places. Recently, ethical guidelines for participatory child research were developed together with children (aged 9-12). Based on these experiences, the following questions will be addressed in the discussion:
- What is ethical research from a child's point of view?
- How can children from different agegroups be involved in all steps of the research process?
- How can participatory research with children be evaluated on quality, considering the various goals that are integrated in the method?

Kitty Jurrius is performing a phd on the quality of participatory youth research, and is director of the Alexander Foundation. She conducted various participatory research projects with children and youth in The Netherlands. In Mali, she trained children to do research using photography, to evaluate a schoolprogram on social and financial education.
