Abstract

Each year an estimated 15 million people are displaced as a result of development projects. Displacement and resettlement tends to be economically and socially detrimental for the people who have to move, but why this consistently occurs, despite efforts to improve resettlement outcomes, is not clearly understood.

In this seminar, the relationship between access to resources and social cohesion will be explored as an alternative explanation for the failures of resettlement initiatives.

Based on fieldwork from 2006-2010, the research presented in this seminar followed the first village that was resettled from the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique from their home inside the park, to their resettlement location, and back into the park to a third location as some households left in search of better conditions soon after being resettled.
