It's NOT the Economy, Stupid!
Second debate organized by ISS and OxfamNovib and co-sponsered by the Transnational Institute on the state of the economy.
This second debate of the series featured Filippino scientist and activist Walden Bello who discussed current responses to the global economic crises. What should be the role of the G20? How can we avoid further economic mayhem, both here and in developing countries?
Professor of Sociology at Philippines University and author of more than 14 books, Bello was awarded the Right Livelihood Award (also known as the Alternative Nobel Prize) in 2003 for "... outstanding efforts in educating civil society about the effects of corporate globalisation, and how alternatives to it can be implemented."
Bello predicted the financial crisis several years prior to the current meltdown and is a globally respected figure within the alternative globalisation movement. Canadian author Naomi Klein called him the "world's leading no-nonsense revolutionary."
Discussants: Kathleen Ferrier, Dutch Parliamentarian for the Christian Democratic Party (CDA) and Peter van Bergeijk, Professor of Economics at ISS and former Chief Trade Economist at the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.
