Civil Society and Market

The research cluster is driven by a simple, but profound recognition: Development is no longer a monopoly of the State.

While the State continues to be the key source of legitimacy and power, an increasing number of the things needed to achieve human well-being such as adequate food, decent labour conditions and a clean environment, will be the outcome of the interaction between civil society and markets, both through confrontation and through collaboration.

Our research seeks precisely to understand the nature of this interaction, and to identify ways in which civic action in a market context can lead to positive outcomes.
