Teaching

Much teaching in the ISS diploma, masters and PhD programmes touch upon issues relevant to migration and human security. Specialized courses have also emerged, including a new, postgraduate diploma programme in Migration and Human Security which will start in April 2012.

Cluster members have also interacted with colleagues at the University of the Witwatersrand and at the University of Ghana, which have both established full-scale post-graduate studies programmes in migration studies.

Centre for Forced Migration Studies (CFMS) at Northwestern

Summer Institute

Founded in January 2010, the Center for Forced Migration Studies at Northwestern University in the USA brings together an interdisciplinary group of faculty and students and fosters collaborative networks with organizations and practitioners to provide an extensive program of research, teaching, training, outreach and networking in forced migration studies. The study of forced migration closely correlates with questions of human rights, nationalism, failed states, disaster relief, climate change, rights of return, economic dislocation, ethics, global health, food and energy crises and the global financial crisis. Responses based on traditional distinctions between refugees and migrants have become less and less adequate given the changing nature of forced displacement.

The Northwestern CFMS Summer Institute is a non-degree earning certificate program intended for researchers and practitioners working with refugee issues, resettlement programs and migration services in non-profit and government organizations in the United States and internationally. Through lectures, focused discussions, workshops and simulation exercises, this one-week Institute held at Northwestern will provide a forum to exchange ideas, build relationships and learn about new developments in the field
