Derek Hall
Derek Hall is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and the Balsillie School of International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. His research on agrarian land relations in East and Southeast Asia focuses thematically on the historical development of property rights and on issues related to the spread of “booms” in crops like cocoa, coffee, fast-growing trees, farmed shrimp, and oil palm. He is the co-author, with Philip Hirsch and Tania Murray Li, of Powers of Exclusion: Land Dilemmas in Southeast Asia (National University of Singapore Press and University of Hawai’i Press, 2011), and is currently writing a book titled Land for a Polity Press series on the geopolitics of resources.
