Miles Kenney-Lazar

Miles Kenney-Lazar is a PhD student in the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University in Worcester, MA. His research broadly examines processes of resource extraction and production in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR or Laos). His first research project focused on agrarian transitions related to the expansion of rubber cash cropping in Luang Namtha and Bokeo provinces of northern Laos. He was particularly interested in the social relationships of farming contracts between Chinese firms and Laotian farmers. Subsequently, he has conducted research in Attapeu province of southern Laos investigating the livelihood changes of Laotian villagers dispossessed of their land by a 10,000-hectare Vietnamese rubber plantation. For his doctoral work, he is researching the emergence of state land concessions to foreign investors for resource access and the relationship between the Lao case to broader, global processes of land grabbing.
