Human Rights

This specialization caters to individuals keen on delving into the intricate dimensions of human rights, encompassing economic, social, cultural, civil, political, sexual, and reproductive rights, and their manifestation across diverse contexts. It examines the characteristics and implications of adopting human rights-based approaches to development.

Recognizing the complexity of human rights (HR) protection, the HR specialization advocates for a multidisciplinary approach as the cornerstone for crafting comprehensive strategies. While acknowledging the importance of various disciplines, particular emphasis is placed on the pivotal role of law, legal institutions, and processes, both within governmental frameworks and civil society endeavors.

One of the two HR courses delves into the nexus of human rights, law, and society. It serves to bridge the gap for participants without a legal background, elucidating how law and other expressions of rights can be leveraged to bolster multifaceted social justice initiatives. For those with legal expertise, the course offers a nuanced and critical examination of the functionality of law and legal institutions across diverse social, cultural, and political landscapes.

The second course within the HR specialization explores the methodologies employed by groups, individuals, and states to advocate for and actualize fundamental human rights and social justice. Through case studies spanning environmental, labor, sexual, disability, and indigenous rights struggles, ranging from South Africa to the US and EU, participants gain insights into the diverse strategies employed in advancing human rights agendas within varied contexts.
