PhD researcher and lawyer, Thandiwe Matthews and former South African judge, Albie Sachs will explore South Africa's constitution discussing its foundations and the hard-won political, civil and socioeconomic rights enshrined within it.

On 5 May 2021, PhD researcher, Thandiwe Matthews, and former justice of the Constitutional Court in South Africa, Albie Sachs, will hold a webinar exploring South Africa’s exemplary constitution which incorporates hard-won political and civil rights, and a plethora of socioeconomic rights.

Justice Albie Sachs will explain what the foundations of the Constitution are and what its desired outcomes were. Thandiwe Matthews will give her views on the topic as a young attorney and social justice PhD candidate.

Ultimately, the webinar aims to answer important questions such as:

  • Is the Constitution a vehicle for meaningful growth and transformation?
  • Should it be reformed to better implement its provisions?
  • What are the discrepancies between the ideals laid out in our constitution and the lived reality of the majority of people?
