During this Research in Progress Seminar, Adnan Dzafic, Assistant Professor at the University of Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina, will discuss the concept if identity in the Bosnian context.
He argues that the concept of identity contains two characteristics: consistency and continuity in time. With this definition in mind, he argues that, until 1992, Bosnian society had all the characteristics of a multilateral society. Since 1992, however, internal and external processes are slowly destroying this cultural identity.
He argues that, historically, Bosnian society was built on mulitlateralism, characterized by multi-ethnicity, multi-religiousness and multiculturalism, and containing elements of Ilyrian, Slavic, Celtic, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian heritage. The positive effects of this heritage were significantly shaken in the early 1990s and continue to be continuously disturbed even today.
