Dr Oane Visser

In this seminar, Associate Professor Oane Visser will discuss his research on sustainably feeding a growing population in times of resource scarcity, accelerating climate change, and inequality and justice.

He argues that technological innovation potentially constitutes a powerful ‘tool’ to address those global challenges.

The complexity of these challenges and their (partial) novelty point in the direction of technology as an important ‘ingredient’ in any effective solution.

Drawing on his recent research on ‘smart or digital agriculture’, he uses agriculture and food as an entry point to address pertinent questions around technology and development. This focus on farming and food enables making abstract issues around digital innovation, its possibilities, limitations and risks tangible and tractable.
