The two most recent Prince Claus Chair holders will hold their inaugural lectures on 10 June.

On 10 June 2021 Professor Gustavo Garcia Lopez, Prince Claus Chairholder 2019-2121, and Professor Seye Abimbola, Prince Claus Chairholder 2020-2022 will both deliver their inaugural lectures in an online ceremony.

  • Professor Gustavo García López, Prince Claus Chair holder 2019-2021

    'Decolonial climate futures in the Caribbean: Justice and sustainability from the frontlines of the climate crisis'.

    As holder of the Prince Claus Chair, Professor Gustavo García López will look into the relationship between Global Social Justice and the Sustainable Development Goals.

    He will focus specifically on the global justice component of the SDGs in order to feed into the emerging research agenda on global inequalities and inclusive societies. He will work closely with researchers at the International Institute of Social Studies and with colleagues from other universities in the Netherlands.

  • Professor Seye Abimbola, Prince Claus Chair holder 2020-2022

    'Love, Justice and Global Health: Crafting Rules for Working Together'.

    Professor Seye Abimbola was appointed as the holder of the Prince Claus Chair 2020-2022. As chair holder, Professor Seye Abimbola will seek to make visible the different ways in which injustice manifests in global health research. The premise of his work is that for global health research to deliver on its goal of justice and equity in health outcomes globally, there must be justice and equity in all processes involved in global health research.

    Working closely with researchers at the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, University Medical Center Utrecht, Utrecht University, the Royal Tropical Institute and with colleagues from other universities in the Netherlands, he will explore potential avenues to promote justice and equity in how knowledge is produced and used in global health.

    Seye Abimbola

Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands is the patron of the Prince Claus Chair. On June 10, she will participate in the event virtually.

After the inaugural lectures, Professor Louise Gunning-Schepers will hand over the role of chair of the Curatorium to Professor Bert Koenders, who is a professor by special appointment of Peace, Law and Security at Leiden University.

The Prince Claus Chair in Equity and Development was established by Utrecht University and the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2003, and rotates annually between the two institutions.

The aim of the chair is to boost the career of outstanding young researchers from developing countries and to stimulate knowledge sharing. The universities wish to use the chair to advance research and education in the field of equity and development in accordance with the views and insights of Prince Claus.
