On 6 March, PhD researcher Chandreyi Guharay, will give a lecture on 'Social Protection on the Move: A Transnational Exploration of Nicaraguan Migrant Women’s Engagement with Social Protection in Spain and Nicaragua'. The lecture is part of the Migration Seminar Series held at the International Institute of Social Studies.
In recent years, transnational social protection has gained widespread attention within social policy, migration and development agendas at national, international and transnational levels. However, still not much is known about the ways in which migrants, particularly women, navigate the welfare systems and mobilize resources across borders to engage with social protection.
In her seminar, Chandreyi Guharay shares insights from her research in which she examines Nicaraguan migrant women’s engagement with transnational social protection using three lenses: transnational angle, migration-social protection nexus and gender.
The empirical analysis reveals how these migrant women mobilize resources and create strategies to access and provide social protection for themselves and their families both in Spain and in Nicaragua.
The narratives also illustrate how migrant women continuously make choices, sometimes out of a limited number of options, thus building their agency to shape their lives and the lives of their families.
