Under US policy, treating unaccompanied Mexican child migrants different from other child migrants is justified, in part, by a consideration of this population as criminalized and exempt from the protections due to children and refugees. Popular narratives of childhood and violence in the border region reinforce perceptions of Mexican youth as criminalized agents.
Amy Thompson, a PhD student at the University of Texas, will present her current mixed methods research project, illustrating how the conflation of migrant children's agency with criminality both obscures and increases their vulnerability and entitlement to state protection.
