The Hague neighbourhoods

The Hague is a city near the sea. A city that people from all corners of the world have been visiting for centuries. The Dutch government is based in The Hague and it is the international city of peace and justice. The Peace Palace is the seat of the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration.

Today, 160 international organizations are based in The Hague. Many leading multinational corporations have established their head offices in the city as well, and the embassies of many nations are based in The Hague.

The city is divided into 8 districts, each of which is further partitioned into different neighbourhoods. In general, the more prosperous neighbourhoods are found to the northwest of the city, while less affluent areas are typically located in the south and east.

The Centre district is vibrant and varied and known for the Binnenhof, Hofvijver, Paleis Noordeinde and it is home to ISS. The centre has many shops, restaurants, entertainment venues, cultural institutions and museums. The Centre is also the venue for major events on the Malieveld, around the Hofvijver and on Lange Voorhout.

You can also go shopping in the Haagse Passage and visit Chinatown for dinner. If you want to go out for a drink, popular locations are the Plein or Grote Markt. The Royal Stables and the Royal Archives and beautiful Palace Gardens are in close proximity of ISS.
There is a wide range of housing in the centre, from stately canal houses to modern apartments. Most ISS DUWO dorms are located at the Centre and next to the ISS building.

The Bezuidenhout neighbourhood is densely built with a mix of typical Hague portico dwellings and flats. 

Beatrixkwartier is part of the Bezuidenhout district. It is the 2nd largest office location in the Netherlands with large multinationals. You can do your daily shopping in Theresiastraat.

From this district, you can travel via Den Haag Central Station directly to the city centre. Bezuidenhout borders Haagse Bos where you can go for a quiet walk or exercise.

Average travel time to ISS: 10-15 minutes by bike, 15-20 minutes by public transport.

Zeeheldenkwartier has beautiful canals, sunny squares, beautiful Art Nouveau architecture and is close to ISS. Most of the amenities are located in Prins Hendrikstraat, Zoutmanstraat, Piet Heinstraat and Anna Paulownastraat.

You will find authentic little shops, pleasant cafés, galleries, clothing stores and trendy design shops. The Peace Palace is also in Zeeheldenkwartier. The city centre is within walking distance.

The majority of the homes are from before 1916.

The neighbourhood has a mixed character with both affordable and expensive homes, large mansions, charming little upstairs-downstairs (two homes in one building) dwellings and even a few courts.

Close to the city centre, Laakkwartier is a very diverse district. Key features in the district include the Haagse Hogeschool and the ROC Mondriaan colleges of higher education.

The district has a young population due to the many students living there. The district has a culturally diverse population, but there is a striking core of authentic ‘Hagenaren’ who have been living there for generations.

Goeverneurlaan is the district’s central axis, with shops, supermarkets and restaurants housed in Berlage architecture. Rijswijk is nearby, you could visit the old parks of Rijswijk. Binckhorst, with its three harbours, is also close by.

Stationsbuurt is enclosed between stations Holland Spoor and Central Station. The area is filled with student homes, restaurants and cafés and the city centre is within walking distance.

The restaurants are more affordable and culturally diverse, and you can find many shops for daily groceries. In Stationsbuurt you can find a number of green areas, like Huijgenspark and Oranjeplein.

Schilderswijk is a densely populated, lively urban neighbourhood. The shops, cafes and restaurants are very diverse, reflecting the multicultural backgrounds of the residents.

More than half of the residential units in the neighbourhood are new buildings, both apartments and single-family homes.  

The neighbourhood is close to the city centre and the Haagse Markt (The Hague market). The Haagse Markt is the largest outdoor market in the Netherlands, and even one of the largest in Europe.

From Schilderswijk, you can also walk to the shops at the Paul Krugerlaan in the neighbouring Transvaalkwartier, or to the city centre.

Accommodation in Stationsbuurt is generally more affordable.
