Passing away of Peter Waterman

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of former ISS staff member Peter Waterman.

Although Peter Waterman retired in 1998, he still was a regular guest at ISS. From 1972 to 1998 he was a much appreciated senior lecturer in the Labour Studies and Politics of Alternative Development programmes. Peter was a good and valued teacher and colleague and he was a well-known person in internationalist labour circles.

Peter Waterman was initially trained as a journalist and worked as labour educator for the World Federation of Trade Unions. Later he left the world of communism and got a Master’s degree in West African Studies in Birmingham after which he taught at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria until he joined ISS in 1972. Since his retirement he has published various books, compilations and numerous academic and political papers.

Peter used to spend several months a year in Peru, where his longtime partner, feminist writer and activist, Virginia Vargas, lives. She, Gina, has also been a lecturer at ISS. Peter Waterman has passed away in his sleep.

Our thoughts are with his partner, other family members and his friends.
