Dina Mani Pokharel appointed Attorney General of Nepal

Dina Mani Pokharel

We are thrilled to announce that Dr Dina Mani Pokharel has been appointed Attorney General in Nepal with the recommendation of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

In December 2022, Attorney General Pokharel was sworn into office in the capital city, Kathmandu. Pokharel is a practicing lawyer with 25 years of experience involving legal research, legislative drafting and training. He completed his Master's degree in International Political Economy and Development (IPED) from the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in 2007. 

Pokarel has remained influential within his home country of Nepal. He was previously a legal expert for Nepal's Constituent Assembly Committee on Natural Resources, Economic Rights and Revenue to improve provisions on the distribution of natural resources at a local and national level. Pokharel also served to the Speaker, Legislature Parliament as a legal adviser. He keeps close ties to academia by regularly engaging in teaching environmental and water law in Pokhara and Tribhuvan University as a visiting faculty member. He continues to publish academic papers in fields of law concerning the environment, political economy, commercial law, and development. 

Pokharel shares that his time at ISS made a positive impact on his career trajectory. 'The political-economic perspective I have acquired [at ISS] has become instrumental to understand, analyze, and argue legal matters in a mature manner. It has increased my analytical abilities to not only frame certain issues, but also to present in court in a coherent and systematic order.'
