We are living in a moment of extreme border closures, violence towards migrants, and state detentions and deportations that have broken international law and are justified through narratives of stopping mass migration from the Global South. Drawing on the last decade of work on mobility justice and the politics of (im)mobilities, Sheller will introduce the concepts of climate mobility justice and mobile commoning as part of an ethics of care within contemporary migration.
During this seminar, Sheller will first define mobility justice in relation to histories of Anthropocene mobilities, climate debt and climate coloniality. She will then consider how we can change narratives of climate migration and climate refugees through the concept of climate mobility justice. Finally, she will develop a theory of mobile commoning as a way of reclaiming subaltern histories of movement that can counter the dehumanization of contemporary bordering practices.
