A commitment to linking quality research to critical social and economic issues

‘Clearly, the deep commitment evident across the Institute to linking quality research to critical social and economic issues remains a key core organisational value.”

‘Several publications of the faculty and students have been much cited and are already seen as influential in the wider development debate, and these include contributions not just by established scholars but also junior faculty.’

(From the latest report by the 2017 assessment committee.)

World leading, socially relevant research

Research conducted at the International Institute of Social Studies has been deemed 'Very good' and 'Excellent' in the Relevance to Society and Viability contexts. This is the conclusion of an external assessment committee which visited ISS in 2017 (latest available report).

The committee based its findings on the Standard Evaluation Protocol (SEP) for Research Assessments in the Netherlands. This Protocol is formulated and endorsed by the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU), the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW) and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).
