Academic Teams

Research at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) is organized into Academic Teams. These form the intellectual homes of ISS academics and PhD researchers.

The thematic focus of the Academic Teams will foster and showcase the role of ISS in specific broader academic discourses on for example development economics, political ecology, social justice and climate.

Crisis, Politics and Law
Research into complex and contradictory power relations that arise in policy attempts to address systemic crises of governance, justice and urbanity
Migration Im/mobility and Place
This Academic Team explores how migration and im/mobilities shape the governance, narration and experience of places, be they local, transnational or digital
Global Health and Economic Development
The Global Health and Economic Development Academic Team addresses health and development challenges facing low- and middle-income countries
Extractive Industries and Just Transitions
Examining the impacts of extractive industries on development, equity and sustainability, focusing on inequalities, resistance and just transitions
Climate Change and Environmental Justice
Investigating how human-induced climate change is intertwined with socioeconomic and envoronmental injustices
Gender, Sexuality and Social Justice
The Gender, Sexuality and Social Justice Academic Team studies the rise of authoritarianism, global inequalities and anti-gender politics
Agrifood, Water and Technologies
Research into the challenges around water, agriculture and food, the links between them and how technologies mediate and shape related issues around them
