The research was carried out in collaboration with Rebecca Mancy (University of Glasgow and Cardiff University), Siqi Qiao (Zhejiang University) and Gill Stewart (University of Glasgow).
With a novel dataset of annual mortality rates for London and Glasgow from municipal archives, parish records and the national census, and linked with indicators of the distribution of income in these areas, they show that mortality rates in these cities halved between the middle of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century.
They found that the fastest improvements in mortality take place much earlier (in some cases over a decade earlier) in areas with a less skewed income distribution. Their results demonstrate that income inequality can create substantial and long-lasting inequalities in the time advantage of accessing the benefits of health progress.
