On 9 December 2020, Adwoa Gyapong will defend her PhD thesis entitled 'Political Dynamics of Global Land Grabs: Exploring the Land-Labour Nexus on Ghana’s Eastern Corridor'

In her thesis, Adwoa Gyapong investigates how corporate large-scale farmland deals impact labour relations, and what its implications are for rural politics and labour governance.

She shows how land grab processes are directly linked to the complex dynamics of dispossession as powerful actors within the intersecting spheres of state, chieftaincy, family and farming institutions capitalize on the sudden commoditization of land to control and exclude certain groups of people from land entitlements and other material resources that accompany large-scale land acquisitions.
