Mora-Vera focuses on two critical attributes: degree of alterity or 'otherness' and social-institutional embedding of the SEE.

Her findings are based on case studies, analysis of policy and other documents, surveys and in-depth interviews with stakeholders such as cooperatives, community organizations and policymakers.

Mora-Vera argues that SEE represents an interactive space where diverse actors converge, negotiating power and resources to foster alternative socioeconomic systems. Yet its transformative capacity remains limited by structural contradictions and insufficient institutional support.
