On 2 July 2026, the Agrifood, Water & Technologies Academic Team of the International Institute of Social Studies is hosting this panel discussion on the future of global food systems in the face of climate shocks, geopolitical disruptions and digital transformations.

Keynote speaker Dr Jiayi Zhou, Senior Researcher in the Conflict, Peace and Security Programme at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), will discuss competing geopolitical agendas in food and agriculture, exploring how food systems are shaped by great and middle powers through strategic competition, economic security, protectionism, and trade politicisation.
A panel of experts will respond, delving into the tensions, trade-offs, and power dynamics shaping food governance today.

- Dr Dominic Glover (IDS) specializing in technology in agrifood systems as research fellow at IDS at University of Sussex.
- Dr Joseph Yaro (University of Ghana) Professor in Geography specialized in peasants and climate change in Western -Africa.
- Paul Bosman (Thinktank Socires), lead ‘Society & Geopolitics drift’, and co-lead of Food First, the multi-stakeholder platform for food security in the Netherlands.
- Oliver Callaghan (SIPRI) specialized on peace/conflict dynamics in food systems in in the greater Horn of Africa.
Moderator: Dr Oane Visser, Associate Professor Agrarian, Food & Environmental Studies at ISS.
The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session during which participants can share their thoughts and questions.
The event will conclude with drinks and networking opportunities.
