In this Research in Progress seminar, Dr Julieta Haidar will reflect on work and labour relations in global platform capitalism from a Global South perspective
Over recent years there has been a proliferation of studies which theoretically and empirically analyse different dimensions of platform work, mainly:
- working conditions
- the relation of control and resistance between platform companies and workers
- the nature of the platforms and the legal relationship established with the workers
At the same time, most of these studies privilege an epistemology from the Global North which projects universal characterizations stemming from concerns and case studies in the central countries.
However, with the aim of understanding the success and quick spread of platform work in the current global platform capitalism, it is necessary to follow three steps:
- analyse the platform workers’ subjectivity dimension
- link this dimension holistically with other analytical dimensions of the phenomenon
- identify the specificities of each dimension according to the diverse geographies where the platform work is embedded

The Research in Progress seminars provide an informal venue for presentations of ongoing research by ISS scholars and other scholars from the wider development studies community.
