As part of an Erasmus+ programme, a consortium at Erasmus University Rotterdam and Makerere University (Uganda) is planning a conference on the political and electoral implications of COVID-19. The aim of the conference is to turn the papers into a joint publication.
Papers are welcome that assess the political fallout of COVID-19 either as a comparative study or as a single country case study. Examples of questions that may be addressed are:
- How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted on electoral rules and institutions, and the credibility of electoral results?
- How did the COVID-19 pandemic impact the meaning and maintenance of order during and after elections?
- To what extent has the COVID-19 pandemic had a transformative impact on national political (legislative and/or judicial) processes?
- How did other structural factors (internal and external) combine with the COVID-19 pandemic to influence electoral processes and outcomes?
- What is the role of technology — especially social media — in influencing elections during and after the COVID-19 pandemic?
Please send enquiries or abstracts (max. 200 words) to Professor Wil Hout, International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam (hout@iss.nl) by 30 July 2026.
