To mark the International Day of Charity on 5 September, our latest theme collection is 'Charity: Help or Harm?'
5 September is the International Day of Charity. According to the United Nations, "Charity at its core is an expression of global solidarity. It brings people together to build more just and resilient societies, whether through direct giving, volunteering, or collective action." But charity is also questioned as a force that may unintentionally do harm.
Our temporary theme collection brings together books that examine charity from different angles — from in-depth explorations of philanthropists and what drives them, to sharp critiques of its impact on society, power, and justice. Whether you’re looking to be inspired, challenged, or simply better informed, these titles invite you to explore the many faces of charity and join the ongoing conversation about what it truly means to help.
