Embracing out-of-the-box economic thinking

Professor Irene van Staveren featured on the podcast Leven na de groei

From news media to politics and classrooms, economic debates are often shaped by a single idea: that people act primarily out of self-interest and that endless economic growth is the ultimate goal. But what if this dominant way of thinking no longer helps us understand – or solve – the challenges of our time?

In a new episode of podcast Leven na de groei, Professor Irene van Staveren invites listeners to rethink the foundations of mainstream economics. In this episode, she explores how alternative economic perspectives can offer more realistic and humane ways of looking at society, decision-making and wellbeing.

Beyond ‘homo economicus’

Professor van Staveren questions the familiar image of homo economicus, the idea that people always act rationally and in their own self-interest. Through everyday examples, she shows how human behaviour is often guided by intuition, care and responsibility rather than calculated personal gain.

She also reflects on major global events, including the 2007–2008 financial crisis, to illustrate how narrow economic thinking can leave societies vulnerable. According to van Staveren, acknowledging values such as cooperation, fairness and care is essential if economics is to better reflect how people actually live and act.
