Dr Zeynep Kasli and Dr Farhad Mukhtarov led this three-day workshop on 'Lessons from the Entanglements of Water Governance and Lived Experiences: Regional Focus on Middle East, South Caucasus and Central Asia'.
Held in Izmir, Turkey on 1-3 July 2026, the workshop examined the everyday life of water governance in interconnected cross-border regions facing acute water security challenges due to climate change, geopolitical shifts, political tensions, mismanagement and extensive infrastructure building.
The workshop focused especially on local water management practices, cross-border (im)mobility of water and humans and how they get entangled with each other.
The presentations focused on, amongst other topics, the Jordan River Basin, peat hydrological commons in Southeast Asia, donor-funded water governance projects in the South Caucuses, water diplomacy on the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Armenia border and drought displacement in Jordan.
