Retiring from the International Institute of Social Studies, Professor Mansoob Murshed gave his valedictory lecture examining the relationship between economic and political inequality.

Speaking to an audience of present and past students, colleagues and academic contemporaries on 31 October 2025, Professor Mansoob Murshed gave his lecture entitled ‘Is Justice only Meant to be Advantageous for the Stronger: Inequality and populist authoritarianism’.
Elaborating on the idea that economic inequality and political risks are two major problems facing the world, he argued that they are inseparable: economic power usually goes hand-in-hand with political power.
Murshed has had a long academic career at the International Institute of Social Studies, teaching and conducting research on inequality, conflict, financial development, populism and autocracy.
